Friends,

If your inbox is like mine, you have been deluged with family and friends who have reached out in the wake of yesterday's threat with concern or words of comfort. We deeply appreciate all the expressions of support that poured out from all over the country, in the media, from our alumnae, and our elected representatives in Atlanta and Georgia.

A special thanks to our Department of Public Safety officers for their swift and effective response. Thanks, as well, to Mayor Andre Dickens for deploying additional APD patrols around the AUC, and Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock and Congresswoman Nikema Williams for lifting the threat to a national level of concern.

With external assistance, Spelman is also undertaking a campus threat assessment. We will begin, as well, the restoration of the training exercises that were routinely conducted by Spelman Public Safety pre-pandemic to communicate existing safety protocols and train our community in emergency response.

History repeats itself. There is nothing new in the attempt to use threats of violence to hold our community hostage and disable us with fear. We are grateful for the compassionate public response. We recognize, too, that compassion must be joined by resolve. We need public resolve to marshal the resources to find and bring to justice the perpetrators.

Those of us who live in historic communities of purpose invite those who stand with us in government, in the private sector, and individually to insist on a thorough federal investigation and adequate surveillance and protective resources at our institutions to guard against future threats.

Undaunted!
